Jeff Bezos Amazon Business Success Thanks to Good to Great
Jeff Bezos Amazon Business Success Thanks to 'Good to Great By the end of last year, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos had amassed a fortune estimated at around $132 billion. Even after the tabloid scandal that prompted his divorce earlier this year, Bezos still held onto an estimated $109 billion worth of Amazon stock â" along with the title of the worldâs richest man. These eye-popping numbers make it easy to forget that Jeff Bezosâs net worth wasnât always astronomical. As an internet and e-commerce pioneer, Amazon had some home run ideas, sure, but there were also plenty of foul balls and some projects that were simply a swing and a miss (remember the Amazon Fire Phone fail?). Just how did Jeff Bezos cope with failures and come up with the winning ideas that helped make Amazon an enormous success â" and make himself incredibly rich in the process? In a new Vox podcast with Kara Swisher of Recode, former Stanford professor Jim Collins, the author of business books including Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap ⦠and Others Donât, recalled a phone call he got from Bezos back in 2001 that changed the trajectory of Amazon, which was then a four-year-old company. At the time, Amazon was struggling in the wake of the dot-com bust and hadnât yet turned a profit. Collins recounted to Swisher how he visited the Amazon campus and talked with Bezos and the other executives about a core idea of his book: Viewing business growth and success as a giant flywheel. The idea, he explained in the podcast, is that all of a companyâs activities should be dedicated to creating and building momentum. âItâs not a list of things you want to do drawn as a circle, itâs an inevitable, âbuilding A will drive B,ââ he said. âThe key is the causal linkage.â Courtesy of Amazon Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap ⦠and Others Donât gave Bezos and his team the road map for a strategic shift in what they needed to do to put that proverbial flywheel in motion. And it worked; they made the leap. Amazon turned its first profit in the last quarter of 2001, and itâs arguable that a big reason for the companyâs meteoric rise has been its focus on sustainable growth for the long haul over short-term profits â" in other words, keeping and honing their focus on what Collins called the âinexorable logicâ that propels success. âIf you can get the compounding momentum of your flywheel in a world that wants you to do something quick and overnight, itâs an enormously powerful thing,â Collins said. Courtesy of Amazon Itâs well-known that Jeff Bezos is a fan of this book. In the 2013 book about Amazon, The Everything Store, author Brad Stone included a roundup of a dozen books Bezos found influential. As might be expected, âJeffâs Reading Listâ is heavy on business and management books like Good to Great, though it also includes some unexpected titles, like Kazuo Ishiguroâs novel The Remains of the Day. It should come as no surprise that Bezos (like fellow billionaire entrepreneur Bill Gates) is a voracious reader; after all, Amazon did start out life as an online bookstore. But the lesson he took away from Good to Great arguably had the greatest impact on his success. Courtesy of Amazon Budding entrepreneurs, take note. If you aspire to emulate Bezos and want to learn more about the flywheel principles, Collins just wrote a companion piece, Turning the Flywheel: A Monograph to Accompany Good to Great, that goes into more detail about the underpinnings and real-life applications of this concept, which helped make Amazon what it is today, and helped make Jeff Bezos the worldâs richest man. 5 Statistics that Matter for Your Job Search - Work It Daily
5 Statistics that Matter for Your Job Search - Work It Daily Each year for the past nine years CareerXroads has conducted a survey about the sources of new hires. The most recent survey (full report available here) solicited source of hire stats for 43 large companies, who collectively filled 176,000 positions in 2009. While the sample size is small, and arguments can and have been made about the accuracy and applicability of the statistics, the survey results are nevertheless revealing, and have some important implications for how job seekers invest their job search energy. 1. Internal transfers and promotions were the source of 51% of all full-time hires in 2009. This is up by 19% from 2006. Why it matters: It is the perennial job seeker debate: should I take a lower level or lower paid position, just to get back in the workforce, or should I wait for my dream job? Three years ago, it may have been good advice to hold out for your dream job because two thirds of positions were being filled externally. Today, it may not be such a good strategy. If you can get your foot in the door of a good company, you stand a better chance of being able to work up to your dream job. 2. Referrals account for 26.7% of all external hires, and yield an average of one hire for every 15 received. Why it matters: You hear it all the time: if you want to land a new job you must network, network, network. This stat demonstrates why. More than a quarter of jobs are filled with somebody who leveraged their network of contacts to get a referral. Outside of internal transfers and promotions, referrals were the single largest source of new hires. BUT, and itâs a big one, nearly 75% of external hires were NOT referrals, which means as a job seeker you need to have a multi-pronged job search strategy. 3. Job boards and corporate career sites accounted for 22.3% and 13.2% of new hires respectively, 35.5% in total. Why it matters: There is a lot of noise about job boards being dead. Donât believe it. Donât spend all day, every day, scanning job boards, but do make sure you are checking in on a regular basis to see who is hiring. Use aggregator sites such as Indeed.com and SimplyHired.com to monitor multiple boards at once, and Linkup.com to monitor new postings on corporate boards. 4. Third party recruiters accounted for 2.3% of all external hires in 2009, down from 5.2% in 2005. Anecdotal auxiliary stat on this: a typical recruiter will have some kind of contact with an average of 100 candidates a week, but will place a fraction of 1% of them. Why it matters: A lot of job seekers have the misconception of the importance of recruiting firms in the grand scheme of job placements (a lot of recruiters do too). Candidates are often outraged about recruiters who focus exclusively on passive candidates, and begrudge the seeming injustice of it. But 97.7% of jobs arenât filled through external recruiters. Those 2.3% of jobs that are tend to have very specific technical, sales or leadership pre-requisites that are hard to find, or have a mismatch between the location of the talent pool and the location of the job. Be findable by recruiters, but donât invest a huge part of your job search energy on trying to break down the recruiterâs door. And donât sweat it if the recruiters arenât returning your calls. 5. 2.3% of external new hires were people who walked in the door. Why it matters: Itâs a comparatively small number, but hereâs the thing. Most job seekers donât do it. My guess is less than 20% do it. In fact, Iâd be venture to say less than 10% do it. This means 23% of job seekers who are so bold as to walk into a company and ask for the job actually end up landing a job. Polish up your cold-calling technique if you want to be one of them. So job seekers, now that you have some insights on sources of hire, how will you change your job hunt strategy? Im the Mom of an Only Child Stop Saying These 5 Things to Me
Im the Mom of an Only Child Stop Saying These 5 Things to Me Growing up, if anyone asked me how many kids I wanted to have some day, I always used to offer a rangeSomewhere between four and six,Id say. Adults used to raise their eyebrows at that number because, well, what teenager says she wants six kids? But I did.Wrapped up in my geistesbild offour to six kidswas the idea that Id stay home to tackle the housework (and write bestselling novels, of course). When I realized how much I loved working and building a career, that discovery came with a necessary adjustment to my plans. So my range shrank totwo or three kids. Then I got pregnant. I had it relatively easyminimal morning sickness, no complications, just swollen ankles and heartburn. Yet I didntlikebeing pregnant. I most certainly did notlikegiving birth. And those first several newborn months? Yeah, definitely dont want to repeat that sleep-deprived haze of postpartum anxiety and depression. The range shrank again, down to ju stone. Now Im the mother of a toddler. When were feeling particularly mushy, my partner and I will look at our curious, bright, babbling daughter, and one of us will say I canalmostsee why people do it again. Then the other will say, Almost, but not quite.Jokes asideI do understand the impulse. I yearn for those quiet moments cradling a tiny baby in my arms after she fell asleep at my breast. I also yearn for the pre-baby days, though, and for many other moments that are in the past. When it comes down to it, I know that for my family and my circumstances, one child is the right choice. So it rubs me the wrong way when I hear the saatkorn few refrains from people who dont understand my choice to have just one child. Here is just a sampling of the stuff Im sick of hearing1. Youll change your mind. Its not just behauptung four words that bother me, although they do suck. Its also the knowing tilt of the head, the condescending smile. I acknowledge that we cant know anything with 100% cer tainty, and yes, people in the history of the worldhavechanged their mind about having only one child. But I am telling you my truth in this moment. Those years when I claimed I wanted a full house? I hadnt actually birthed a child before or changed four poopy diapers in two hours. Now I would argue I am mora informed than I have ever been.2. Wont she be lonely?I do have some guilt over this one, so please stop rubbing salt in the wound. Yet although I have a phenomenal relationship with my brothers and sister and all their spouses, I know more families marred bypainful sibling relationships. So theres no guarantee my kid will be any happier with a brother or sister. Plus she has plenty of friends, between daycare, her cousins (who all live nearby), and everyone in between.3. Who will help her take care of you when you get old?Im not about to procreate for the express purpose of having more help when Im elderly. No, I dont want my daughter to feel burdened by caring for her parentsb ut thats no reason to bring another wholelifeinto the world, and I think its more a matter of ensuring she knows that we dont expect her to do it all herself.4. Youll see when you have another. Two things wrong with this phrase firstly, it assumes that youre having another (and a surprising number of people do assume), and secondly, its invalidating. Undoubtedly parents of multiple children have a difficult job. But has anyone in the world ever really liked playing thewho has it worsegame? You probably remember how hard you found things when you had a single child, and you too probably hated it when anyone suggested that was easy.5. Now you just need a boyGross. Just, gross. What is it about a boy that you dont get in a girl? Or vice versa? I fundamentally disagree with the premise that the biological sex you are born with determines whether you like playing in the dirt or playing with dolls. Gender is fluid, as we are learning more and more these days, and we should encourage our ch ildren to pursue anything that interests them, gender norms be damned. Whats more, THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT I WILL HAVE A BOY THE NEXT TIME. Do you expect me to just keep popping out babies until I get a boy? No thanks.I may come across as flippant but its only a defense mechanism, learned over time as Ive shielded myself from constant questions and comments about my only child. I love my daughter and at least for now she is the only kid I can foresee for my family. I respect those families who feel able to bring another child into the world. I trust that they have carefully considered that decisionso I ask that I am met with the same trust.--Kelsey Down is a freelance writer in Salt Lake City who has been featured on publications including Elite Daily, VentureBeat, and SUCCESS. 5 Things You Need For A Successful Second Interview
5 Things You Need For A Successful Second Interview5 Things You Need For A Successful Second Interview Congratulations Earning a second interview invitation is no small feat. Youve surpassed ample and stiff competition to get this far. So bask in your success for a moment. You deserve that infusion of confidence , and youll need it to propel you through the next round. Before you can nail this meeting, its important to know your purpose. How is this meeting different than your first? Nancy Range Anderson, author , career coach and founder of Blackbird Learning Associates, LLC explains During the first interview, the interviewer asked questions to determine three areas can you do the job, do you fit into the company culture and do you really want this job. Its pretty certain that in the second interview more senior level staff will be conducting the interviews and while they may ask similar or the same questions that were asked in the first interview, the purpo se of this interview is to compare you and your skill set with the other candidates .The second interview presents a chance to have a deeper conversation about the job with some of the key players. Enthusiasm is a core component of emotional intelligence because it fosters connection. If youre excited about this job and this institution, share that. Point out what you observed during your first interview that got your excited. Sharing your genuine enthusiasm enables you to tap into that of your interviewer which can lead to a two-way conversation about professional passions . So think about what appeals to you about this environment and the people youve met so far. Do you sense that they all seem to really love their jobs? Do they seem excited about their work, or about the population they serve? Consider an ice breaker like I met two team members when I was here last week. Both raved about the students here, which made me feel really excited about this prospect. That kind of e nthusiasm cant be faked, and its such a strong endorsement. This can eingabeaufforderung your interviewers to share what they love about their work and their workplace, which can loosen up the conversation and give you valuable insights.A second interview presents an opportunity for you to sell you skillset and to demonstrate how your experience has well-stelleed you for the open position. Anderson points out that at this stage, candidates should detail their accomplishments and focus on the impacts of their professional efforts. Anderson explains The interviewer at this stage wants to know, Whats in it for me/us? and What can this candidate do to help us accomplish our goals that the other candidates cant do?. Think about your current role. Maybe you work for an international organization and youre well versed in the nuances of hosting international guests and colleagues. Maybe your work for a start-up and you know how to work hard and lean. Find your angle. Then demonstrate to your potential colleagues how your unique professional experience makes you particularly well-suited for this role, and a must have for their team.A job description is a managers wish list for his/her ideal candidate. Study this document to drive your prep. Anderson recommends To prepare the candidate needs to focus on the responsibilities, skills and requirements of the open position and come up with specific behavioral stories detailing his or her actions and results. Anderson advises a very direct approach I suggest that the candidate draw a two-column chart. In the left column, list the hard and soft skills , tasks and job responsibilities required of the position and in the right-hand column write out examples of work-related accomplishments that support these. Above all, the candidate should focus on his or her role in these accomplishments and use words such as I rather than We. While you always want to emphasize that you know how to function well on a team, you also wa nt to highlight the individual successes that set you apart. Do your research and know your worth . Anderson advises The candidate should be prepared to discuss salary at any time during the interview process. Anderson explains Salary discussions usually come up towards the end of the interviewing cycle and most likely will be initiated by the interviewer. This can be a positive sign.Anderson points out an interview is a two-way conversation. So dont squander your opportunity to ask questions by posing queries that you think will impress the interviewers. Get the lowdown you need. These are some questions Anderson recommends Remember, getting this invitation is a huge deal. Youre a stellar pro, and you have a lot to be proud of. Good luck
